How to install Extruded Solutions' Tailgate Seal with Taper Seal®

ITEMS REQUIRED: Scissors, clean rag and soap solution.

Extreme temperatures will result in poor adhesive performance. Apply only if air and surface temperature is between 55° - 105°F (13° - 40°C).
Avoid touching adhesive after peeling off red liner. Repositioning of seal should not be done more than 3 times and only 1 time if the temperature is above 80°F (13°C).

Clean area thoroughly with soap and water solution and wipe completely dry. Use alcohol pads to prep the tape application area (see pictures to determine area) and let dry. Pictures shown are for the left sidewall and bottom.

Note: Use chisel side of reversible tip for enclosed adhesion promoter.

STEP 1: ATTACHING STANDARD SEAL TO LEFT INNER SIDERWALL

Lower tailgate. Apply a 5/8” wide line of adhesion promoter to the area on the inner sidewall where adhesive will be adhered to (FIG 1). Remove a section of adhesive liner and start at the bottom, with bulb side facing towards center, and begin attaching. Apply light pressure to adhesive and continue upwards towards the top. When approaching any curves attach in ½” increments and conform seal to curves. When approaching the top leave 3” of seal detached. Determine where seal will end and cut (FIG 1B). Apply 3” section. Apply very firm pressure (25 lbs.) to secure adhesive bond. Duplicate for right side.

STEP 2: ATTACHING LARGE TAILGATE SEAL TO TOP OF TAILGATE

Cut a 4 ¾” (12cm) piece from Large Seal. Apply a 5/8” wide line of adhesion promoter to the area where adhesive will be adhered (FIG 2). Remove adhesive liner. Bulb will be facing down and flush with bulb on the inner sidewall. Attach seal and conform to curve. (FIG 2 and 2A). After seal is in place apply very firm pressure to secure adhesive bond. Duplicate for right side.

STEP 3: ATTACHING PIECE OF LARGE TAILGATE SEAL TO TOP OF TAILGATE

Cut a 2 3/8” (6cm) piece from Large Seal. Raise tailgate but do not close. Prior to removing the adhesive liner hold seal with left hand as shown in FIG 3 and 3A. Hold in place with left hand while pushing up tailgate with right hand. No need to close tailgate. Hold seal so that top of seal is flush with top of tailgate and top of bed rail.

One fin or both fins of seal should make slight contact with side of bed rail (FIG 3B). Mark this position and apply a 5/8” wide line of adhesion promoter to the area where adhesive will be adhered to. Remove adhesive liner and attach as shown in FIG 3A. Apply firm pressure to adhesive. Duplicate for right side.

STEP 4: ATTACHING STANDARD SEAL TO GAP IN TRUCK BED TRUNK COVER

Cut a 2” (5cm) piece from Standard Seal. Bulb of seal will be flush with bulb of seal on inner sidewall. Apply a 5/8” wide line of adhesion promoter to the area where adhesive will be applied to. Remove adhesive liner and attach, bulb facing down, as shown in FIG 4 and 4A. Duplicate for right side.

STEP 5: ATTACHING STANDARD SEAL TO THE HORIZONTAL TAILGATE GAP

Most often bulb side is up for Ridgeline (FIG 5).
To evaluate the best positioning for the tailgate gap, cut a 1” (2.5cm) test piece and align the top of bulb with the truck bed floor. Stand to the side of truck and raise tailgate until bulb makes contact with tailgate.
NOTE: Compression and/or slight rolling of the bulb is okay, however, if the bulb rolls downwards too much as the tailgate is closing and you can see the tape, then seal has rolled too much. This can cause added stress on the adhesive and possible separation.

If you see that the bulb is rolling too much then invert 1” test piece so that bulb side is down. Raise tailgate and make sure no light is visible through the 1” piece. Adjust 1” piece higher or lower to seal out the light. After determining if the bulb should be up or down and how high or low, remove 1” piece and pick up one end of the continuous seal.

Apply a 5/8” wide line of adhesion promoter to the area where adhesive will be adhered to. Start at either end, peel back a section of liner and flush end of seal to seal on the inner sidewall (FIG 5). Attach in sections and apply light pressure. Continue to apply seal from roll and stop 3” before reaching opposite inner sidewall. Determine where seal will end and cut. Apply 3” section and flush to bulb on the inner sidewall. After seal is in place apply very firm pressure (25 lbs.) to secure adhesive bond.

STEP 6

Apply very firm pressure (25lbs.) to secure the entire adhesive bond. Leave tailgate open for 30 minutes. If the air temperature will fall below 50°F (10°C) within the next 24 hours, then leave tailgate open for 24 hours before closing.
